The perfect combination of food, libations, live music, and waterfront location presented a unique opportunity to highlight and contribute to the Oyster Recovery Partnership, a vital non-profit organization dedicated to sustaining the Chesapeake Bay’s oyster population. Residents from all over the Mid-Atlantic region spend many a summer creating memories with friends on the water whether sailing, swimming or simply enjoying the beauty and bounty of the Bay. Oxfords & Oysters created a special afternoon event for memory-making while recognizing the importance of giving back and learning about the ORP's Shell Recycling Alliance. Oysters are a critical species to the Bay's long term recovery. A healthy oyster reef not only cleans dirty water, but also provides a firm bed for a community of new oysters, barnacles and mussles - which in turn furnishes valuable habitat for blue crabs, striped bass and other important marine life. Unfortunately, due to disease, habitat loss, declining water quality and historic over-fishing, the oyster population has plummeted. Oysters used to filter our entire Bay in just days. Now it takes more than a year! For information about how to sponsor, contribute or volunteer for the 2011 Oxfords & Oysters, please contact us: hello@skyblue-events.com
