Bryant Park + Tents + Fashion = Inspiring Memories
Ah, memories.
After a lovely double Illy espresso and a few minutes to review the long list of NYT articles I hadn't quite gotten to yet this week, I came across a blog post about the Marc Jacobs show which led me to the Eric Wilson video commentary about the final shows in Bryant Park.
As a Fashion Institute of Technology student, I was there for the first tent shows in Bryant Park. Proudly armed with my official plastic badge and official black and white tshirt, I had the opportunity to help seat buyers, editors and socialites. I got to work backstage as a dresser. I ran around frantically meeting the demands of designers, models and makeup artists. Imagine the magical atmosphere I got to experience as a student. Absolutely inspiring.
Over time, I was fortunate enough to have a variety of jobs in the industry that allowed me to watch the shows from the audience as well as help produce and direct them from backstage. As the tents' popularity grew, as fashion moved to the forefront of the media, and, even as more and more celebrities began to fill the front rows for publicity purposes, the excitement of being part of the first Seventh on Sixth shows never failed to inspire me.
Now, I'm grateful for technology and the speed the runway images and news coverage gets published so that I feel I'm right there covering the collections again and part of all the excitement. For the latest news on the Fall 2010 collections and everything Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week related, The New York Times has the best coverage and insight in my opinion.
So long, Bryant Park...thanks for the memories!
